According to the latest data, artificial intelligence is now used by nearly one in five businesses across the United States. That leaves a vast untapped market, with roughly 80% of companies yet to adopt AI technologies. The overall adoption rate has remained remarkably stable, hovering between 17 and 20 percent since late 2025.

Looking ahead, up to 23% of firms plan to integrate AI within the next six months, a signal of potential growth. Adoption is not uniform: larger companies are currently leading the charge, and a company's scale is the primary driver of whether it uses AI.

There are also significant disparities by industry, with knowledge-based sectors like Information and Finance far ahead of the curve, and those same leading sectors are where the most significant future growth is expected. The survey tracks the trend from late 2025 and projects it forward through late 2026. This analysis is based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau's Business Trends and Outlook Survey.

For the bigger picture, see how enterprise AI is driving business transformation and why 80% of enterprise AI projects stall before production.

The number that matters is the 80%. Adoption has held between 17 and 20 percent for months, which means the market is not saturated, it is barely started. The firms already using AI are the larger, knowledge-heavy ones, which tells smaller and service businesses something useful: the tools have been proven by the companies with the most to lose, and the cost of entry has fallen since they adopted. The 23% planning to adopt within six months are about to become your competitors, or your example.

For a small or mid-sized business, the practical move is not a moonshot, it is one workflow. Start where the leak is most expensive, usually the missed call or the follow-up that never goes out. At PATech we build exactly that first step: voice agents that answer every caller and automation that handles the routine, so a small team can compete with a larger one. Being in the 20% is less about budget than about picking the right first job.
